the melodramatic mouse attempts to blog

Screen time bad for Baby
CNet News Reported in 2007
The No.1 reason parents allow babies to watch television and DVDs is the mistaken belief that the programming is educational and, or good for brain development.
This is a false and deceptive marketing of television programming and DVDs that target babies!
Want a smart baby? TV’s not going to help
CNN Health Reported in 2009
Baby educational DVDs and videos steal time from much more productive cognitive developmental activities.
Babies who spent more time watching TV had lower language and visual motor skills at age 3.
There’s still more evidence of harm than benefit as far as TV viewing in infancy is concerned.
There are a lot of reasons why I do not advocate watching TV to Natey. False brain development aside, I worry for their little eyes. It’s so easy for children and adults alike to get addicted. Just imagine it for a baby who’s oh-so-curious for the colourful moving objects on the screen.
I know a lot of my friends — I’m not judging — had already introduced it to their babies. It’s a great way to shut them up keep them occupied. And that’s a Huge temptation!
I don’t know how long I can keep Natey sans TV. Hopefully I will not fall prey and find better ways to organise my hours so I would not need the dumb box to babysit my son

Agree! Will not encourage the idiot box to bring up little Sophie… There’s so much more activities to keep the little one occupied!

i’m not one who encourages kids to watch too much tv. i believe there’s a time for everything (the bible says so too). i get irritated when my nieces spend almost the whole day in front of the tv spacing out. i think it’s ok for kids to have some tv time… it’s also part of their me-time i feel.

Jac, you watched TV since you were 1 day old and yet you’ve grown up smart and can write very well now. The effects aren’t too bad after all

I guess there’s no big harm to watch a bit. As long as your baby doesn’t get addicted to it and whine for it day and night.
It’ll be harder to stop a whiny crying baby. So why not prevent it from happening right? How to talk sense to a baby? Possible maybe?
Why not only introduce the idiot box later?

I stumbled across your blog quite by accident. I was looking up westi cuts because I’m taking my westi to the groomers for his first visit and don’t want to bring home a westi that looks like a white schnauzer. (How ever you spell it)
Anyways, I have to agree that tv is not a good idea for babies. Even for kids it is questionable. How much better is it for kids to be playing, helping, or reading than sitting around wathing tv.
It is tempting to use it as a babysitter when you want them out of the way after a hard day but stick to your guns about it and you will be happy in the end. Your kids will be talented, smart, and productive, high functioning members of society.
