Breast Pumps, pt 3 – My Verdict.

In: My Reviews

2 Apr 2010

I got the Medela Harmony last November during Fabulous Mom’s Relocation Sale for a steal at RM211, normal price is RM269. At that point, getting a pump was for the just-in-case situations. So budget played a big part ;)

As advised by the Mommies on MsianBrides, a manual pump was sufficient if I am a SAHM and planning to breastfeed exclusively. They said I probably wouldn’t need it, but who would have guessed my fate *pouts*

Medela Harmony
With 2-Phase Expression
Medela Harmony with 2-Phase Expression Breast Pump

My Verdict: 4 star
1) Super lightweight

2) Easy to dismantle for cleaning

3) Silent pumping

4) Ergonomic handle that can swivel right and left for a more flexible position

5) 2 Breastshields (Normal or SoftFit) to choose from — I prefer the normal shield even though it appears harder

6) Overall I love the Yellow

Although I heart my Harmony, if given a 2nd chance I wouldn’t get a manual BP after experiencing the challenging beginning of breastfeeding. An electric BP could save all those time that I couldn’t afford to manually pump. Not forgetting the ache both my wrists suffered from pumping 6-7x a day.

Maybe after Nathaniel begins teething, and if he does bite — hopefully not pls — I’ll break my piggy bank and invest in this *oooaahh*

Medela Swing
(Normal Price: RM799)

hehe told ya, manual boleh lenguh tangan.

anyway dont get the swing. I heard it is v.v.noisy. mcm mesin rumput. wanted to get that initially but end up change to freestyle. hehe i know i know wayyyy to expensive. but I got it for such a steal. (1.2k) like 800 for swing plus another 400 can get double pump, electric and handsfree sumoreee. heheh. syok wei. boleh surf2 sambil pump. and it only take me 20-25 minutes per session.

anyway I’m utilising the pump to the max now, since I rarely bfeed direct, so I guess its worth it.

Swing also like lawnmower? Aiks! Let me go and test it at Gleneagles tomorrow. Their Lactation Consultant highly recommended it. I saw a demo she did on another Mother previously and it looked good.

I takde income la babe. Mana nak dapat 1.2k for a pump? Even nak buat freelance skarang pun tak larat :P

So why aren’t you breastfeeding?

Hi,

Congratulations on your new born. If you want to buy medela swing, you can consider ameda lactaline. Its the same price and can be used as single or dual pump. I doubt I can breastfeed for this long without this pump. My gal is 18 months old now.

Thank you! Yes I have not forgotten about Ameda Lactaline. It was one of my shortlist last year :)

Getting a dual pump would probably be more advisable! I’m going to listen to your advice.

Btw, Natey’s paed is Dr Adrian Goh. Maybe we might bump into each other when you see Dr Patrick Chan :)

Ya, we might bump to each other. Sometimes I bring my gal to Dr Adrian Goh if Dr Patrick is not around.

Don’t throw away your milk. Freeze it and store it in the freezer. It can last for 3 months. There will be days that you got low milk supply or unable to breastfeed, you can use the EBM.

I used to store 2 and a half freezers full of EBM. Now not anymore. My supply has drop tremendously.

Noted!

Are you drinking anything to help maintain your supply? Papaya soup or milkmaid tea?

I drank papaya soup during confinement month.

Milk maid tea doesn’t work for me. The things that made my high supply last for a year is fenugreek seed. You can buy it from Jusco. A big bag from organic section costs only RM6.00. You also can find it herbs section and it cost RM0.60(non organic) a bag. However, it is very bitter and very hard to drink/swallow. Alternately, you can buy fenugreek tablet from GNC. For me the seeds works better.

You can also try dried logan drink and fish maw soup.

My urut lady gave me a packet of that fenugreek seeds. I have yet to try it. It smells similar to the milkmaid tea I am drinking by Earth Mama Angel Baby.

Currently I have no idea how much I am producing since I do not express anymore. I only express it out if I feel uncomfortable after baby finishes or while waiting for him to wake up.

I love papaya soup. Not sure if it helped.
