Ameda Lactaline Personal Dual Electric Breast Pump

Since I no longer draw a paycheck, everything seems to be a gift one way or another. So it’s nice to claim — though self declared — this as my Mother’s Day present from the husband :)

I tried my new toy early this morning at 3am, yielding a fair amount of 2oz each after 20 minutes. I usually can get more with my Harmony. I think because manual expression lets me have more control. And sometimes 2 sore wrists *pouts*

Anyhow it was nice being able to express both breast at once, especially at that hour when they are already painfully engorged. Hopefully with more practice, I can empty both sides more quickly and fruitfully as well.

I’ll post a comparison verdict in a week or two, but I suspect that it’ll be a tie for both pumps hands down. In one way or another ;)

Actually, you don’t have to use both hands while using ameda. You can use only one hand, with your elbow supporting one side of the bottle while your fingers holding another bottle. Usually I use one hand to pump while the other hand on the computer mouse, surfing internet.

Using ameda is a little bit tricky. This is because there’s two knob to rotate, one vacuum and one cycle. To imitate the Medela PISA 2 phase expression, initially you need to put one low vacuum and high cycle. Once the let down is achieve, toggle to high vacuum and medium cycle.

I have both medela harmony and ameda. For medela harmony is very difficult to achieve let-down. Once let-down is achieved, yield is high. For ameda, very easy to achieve let down. Usually less than a minute. My whole pumping session for ameda takes about 5 mins while medela harmony takes about 30 mins.

Hi LinLin

Thanks for reminding me of Lactaline previously. Else would have really gotten Swing :)

Yup I used 1 hand to hold both bottles this morning. The free hand I use to massage my engorged breast. I have very bad block ducts so the milk flow is very slow because of that.

I actually bought the Pumpin’Pal (handsfree and Super Shields – will write that in another post) sold by Enjoybreastfeed. Haven’t really tried it yet, only tested yesterday afternoon. Need to balance it better.

I wanted to ask for your advice about fully BF and expressing. When to express when you BF? I have to express because of engorgement and block ducts every 2hrs else they become rock hard. And because of this, my body is producing way too much. So it seems like I am forever pumping in between feed until no time to rest :(

What I did is I latch of baby on one side of the breast while using harmony to empty another side of the breast. For the next feed, baby latch on the other size of the breast while I pump on the side which was previously feed by the baby. This method I can save time and energy. I did this over the weekend.

During the weekdays while at work, I pump 5x a day using ameda, 6am, 11.30am, 5.00pm, 10pm and 2am. Baby direct latch on after she is back from baby sitter place at 7pm.

For you case, instead of pumping 2 hours, how about delay it slightly like every 2.5 hours. This is to let your body knows your baby doesn’t need that much.

I did try BF and pumping at the same time but found it a bit too challenging. Natey likes to swing his arms and feet sometimes when he’s latching.

I’m using the pressure massage technique since last night and I found it very good to relieve the swelling rather than pumping out.

I know a lot of people think I waste when I pour away my EBM. But if Natey is not consuming it, storing it would be wasting space. And it is not good to keep in the freezer for so long, especially when we open and close the door so often that the temperature is not even — advice from the midwife.

I have 17 bottles now for emergency. Waiting for next month to be thrown away *faints* Then I will collect again :P
