Sinfully Healthy Snack

Our Verdicts:

After leaving for 8hrs in the maker and into the fridge for a day, I present to you our very own homemade fresh strawberry yogurt. It’s yummy yummy! says Natey *licks*

As you can read from the instructions above, this is really a no fuss “cooking” delight. The fuss only comes later if we want to be adventurous by using our ready made yogurt for dips, smoothies, ice lollies, sauce, soup, etc. For the time being, eating on its own is good enough an indulgence for us

I bought our Easiyo Maker and the mixes at Vitacare Pharmacy. It is also available at Caring Pharmacy. You can find the mixed yogurt packs — Standard Yogurt, Lower Fat Yogurt, Specialty Yogurt, Biolife Yogurt, Premium Yogurt — in assorted flavours at Cold Storage, Village Grocer and Jaya Grocer. Price starts from RM15.50. The ones I bought above are RM16.30 per packet.

Each mix makes 1kg of delicious yogurt and keeps for 2 weeks. But I doubt it would last even a week in anyone’s fridge

This is definitely an investment I would recommend. And it makes an excellent gift too!

Does the thought of drinking oil makes you go yuck? That’s exactly how I feel — even if I’m not pregnant — on any given day. But after researching on its uber goodness, how could I refuse? Especially when it is the healthiest oil in the world! *wahh*

I finally bought a bottle of organic VCO and took my 1st teaspoon on Wednesday after lunch. To my surprise, it is fragrant and very sweet smelling. Although tasteless, it still felt like oil in my mouth nonetheless. It’s gonna take me a while to get used to swallowing this. I increased to 1tsb yesterday. The recommended daily intake for adult is 3tsb *gulp*

Organic Cold Pressed VCO
500ml for RM33.90

How is it made?

The coconut oil is extracted from well matured and fresh coconut meat by mechanical or natural means.

To maintaine the oil’s essential properties — as present in their original state — VCO is obtained without using heat, or undergoes chemical refining, bleaching and deodorizing.

VCO is colorless, sediment free with natural fresh coconut scent and free from rancid odors or tastes.

Pregnancy Goodness

Prevents high level of blood sugar – ie onset of pregnancy gestational diabetes

Increases the immune system of newborns

Aid in the brain and bone development of newborns

Are you going Wow yet after reading the goodness above? Yuck or not, I will diligently drink it everyday from now onwards. I’ve also introduced a teaspoon to Natey yesterday and he has no complain *phew*

Let’s stay healthy together – Mommy, Baby and everyone else. Bottoms up!

These little green gems in a pod are my latest craving. If you don’t know what they are, edamame are often seen served on a plate going around the conveyor belt in sushi bars — from RM1.99 for a handful — and are actually fresh green soya beans.

Edamame is known for being one of the power food for expecting mommies. They are a rich source for Carbohydrates, Protein, Dietary Fiber, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and micronutrients, particularly Folic Acid, Manganese and Vitamin K. That’s not all! Just look at the long list of nutritional goodness below *whoa*

I bought mine frozen in a bag of 500g for RM9.90 at Shojikiya in The Gardens, Mid Valley. They are quick to prepare and oh so delicious to munch on anytime of the day. All you need is a pot of boiling water, toss them in for 1 minute, drain, sprinkle some salt and enjoy! Easy Pea-sy

Why am I snacking on soy? If you’ve been following me since my previous pregnancy, you may remember a post I did on Pregnancy & Soya Beans. It was an alarming revelation for me then because I was expecting a boy and I immediately swore off soy after that. But now that I am having LBT, I guess this wouldn’t be a big concern *phew*

So here’s to soy goodness. Nothing like indulging on a snack that’s satisfying for me and good for my darling girl

Our Verdicts: Natey Mommy

1 sip was all he took and out it came right after. The rest of the 120ml? As usual, Mommy had to play DBKL and finished it all.

I wonder if it was a mistake to give Natey the Chocolate first. It’s like introducing a taste of heaven, then back to earth with this. I know it happened to me when I was little — I was sick and my Popo gave me Milo, took 1 sip and that was it for plain milk

Comparing sweetness level between this and Anmum Essential, the latter is definitely much more sweeter. Even that, till this day I am still having trouble convincing Natey to drink more than 45ml. So I can understand why he didn’t like this Full Cream Milk. Natey is definitely a Mommy’s boy

Looks like I’ll have to finish the rest of the 3 boxes. I’ll need to get me some Koko Krunch to go with it!

Our Verdicts:

To date Natey already had 5 packs of this chocolatey Dutch Lady Kid. The most he could finish is half a box of the 125ml. Each time taking a small sip and a bite of bread puff.

Whenever I introduce new food, the ingredient is a concern. The 2nd on this list is Sucrose aka Sugar. I reckon I would not have given Natey this if not because we are travelling and I wanted the convenience. Ever since watching the Anmum advertisement about hidden sugar, I have been careful not to overlook the many names of Sugar.

The chocolate milk is “acceptably” sweet. I was worried that Natey might get addicted to the taste and refuses anything unsweetened. Surprising (touch wood!) he would still take the plain water I offer him after he is done to wash the milk down.

I’ve just bought their Full Cream Milk. So look out for this space again for the next review

Two months after Natey started taking solids, I began “making” our own snacks. Toasted bread stripes is one of the top recommended choices. It is easy to make and definitely a healthier alternative to over the counter snacks.

I started with stripes but quickly improvised into bite size squares, which proved to be more of a favourite for Natey and mess-free for Mommy. He loves his bread puffs so much that he learned the word Bread, very quickly and pronounced it accurately too. It is his favourite treat and ask for it all the time

Healthy Wholemeal Bread
Cut a slice of bread into small squares

Toss into the Oven
Toast the squares until desired crunchiness

Keep airtight for Freshness
Ready to eat whenever and wherever!

After removing the skins, I cut a slice of bread into 5 stripes and into 25 squares. Previously before Natey knows how to ask for food all the time, that ration could last for 2-3 days but now he could easily finish all in a day. I call them puffs because once the bread is toasted, the squares really does look and taste like crunchy puffy snacks

I would put 10 puffs into the round container and keep the rest in the Lock&Lock to maintain its crunchiness. Natey will ask “Bread, please!”, puts his tiny hand through the plastic divider, takes one, puts into his mouth cheekily and goes about his business. He will return again when finished and ask for one more. By the 5th piece, he would have forgotten *hehe*

Now that I’ve started Natey on Anmum Essential mixed with baby cereal for breakfast — he still refuses the formula on its own — I’ll dip some puffs in the remaining formula and feed him as a starters. It is really yummy just like having cereal puffs with milk! He would be more accepting to take a few spoons of the formula after finishing the puffs. Hopefully soon he can take it in a cup *fingers crossed*

If you haven’t already tried toasting bread for your toddler, and is looking for an economical — kids snacks are not cheap (esp the way they down it like water) and sugar packed — yet healthy snack, why not give this a try. Improvise with different bread or toast it with some fruit puree for extra taste

Our Verdicts:

This is our 1st box of Rafferty’s Garden since trying a sample last Nov. I bought it yesterday at Mercato Supermarket in Hartamas Shopping Complex. It comes in a box of 12 rusks for RM13.99.

Although RG is not organic as compared to Bellamy’s Toothie Peg, I’m still going to give it a 5 star. That’s because it contains:

*No Added Sugar
*No Artificial Flavours
*No Artificial Colours
*No Preservatives
*No Egg

Similar to Toothie Peg, they are also packed in pairs but the quality of the plastic wrapper is much thinner. So I would recommend storing them in air tight containers to avoid turning soft.

RG is also slighty softer than Toothie Pegs but they are just as tough. I’m happy to share that it took Natey a good 40mins to finish the entire bar, while attentively learning his baby sign language (coming in next post!).

Natey has lost interest in his teethers — after 5mins top, obviously because they are tasteless rubber — so gumming on a healthy rusk would be the next best alternative to keep his mouth occupied. He pokes his teething gums and often sucks his fingers – a phase all toddlers go through.

Since it takes longer to finish a rusk — depending on brands as some are softer eg Heinz Farley’s Rusks — it is a good distraction for hyper toddlers to keep busy for that 20-30mins while Mommy gets some chores done around the house

Our Verdicts:

We bought our 1st box of Toothie Pegs last Nov and only finished the last peg yesterday itself. That’s like an average of 2 pegs (RM2.60) a month *wah*

Natey seldom snacks on rusk because he looses interest very fast and off it lands on the floor. He would gnaw on the peg for about 10mins — occasionally switching ends — and drops it. Without any teeth then, the peg would looked untouched except being slippery slimy. After wiping it dry, I would finish it with Nutella and breaking a tooth along the way

Now that Natey knows how to ask for food — pestering till you do — it is not so wasteful to give him the peg as it did previously. 8 out of 12 pegs were intentionally dropped and wasted. Today you will need to pry it off his little hands.

What I like about Toothie Pegs? 1) Organic, 2) No Added Sugar, 3) Iron Enriched, 4) No preservatives or additives, 5) Long shaped (8.5cm) easy for little hands to hold compared to the common round or oval shape 6) Extra hard equals extra time to finish!

Although the pegs are individually packed, I still keep them in air tight containers — store in small Lock&Lock boxes — to help maintain freshness. With our country’s humid weather, anything is easily softened even in unopened wrappers.

If you’re looking for a natural and less sweetened — other brands are just too sweet — healthy snack, I would definitely recommend Toothie Pegs. I love the shape and it takes <strike>a long time</strike> awhile to work through!
