Novice Sewing Adventure, pt 1.

I embarked on my first ever sewing ~~with machine~~ adventure last month after the husband recovered my Mother’s older-than-me mini sewing machine tucked away in our storeroom.

Since then, I’ve been busy polishing my crafts-person skill after not sewing — altering pants and sewing buttons not qualified — since my Form 3′s Kemahiran Hidup Project for the Penilaian Menengah Rendah Examination. If only I kept a photo — I was quite proud of that outcome! *beams*

Here’s what I’ve been up to for the past 2 weeks. Not a bad start for a sewing machine newbie

Simple-to-do coin pouches for warm up
The Butterfly and Heart shape was hand stitched

Handphone pouch with side zipper
Made from my Ikea curtain ends and inside lining with Barnslig cloth

A tiny cushion for my needles
The word Pillo was also hand stitched freehand

A Bow Bag made with my very own hands! ♥
There’s 2 pockets inside for your handphone and keys

What is your verdict?

I’m currently having problem finding “decent” looking fabrics because everything I found was ~~scary, shinny and flowery~~ not to my liking.

I’m deciding to get another sewing machine — one that can actually sew without me cursing. This antique machine is pretty incomplete to expect it being able to do anything more. It doesn’t have or needs a bobbin, and it’s not sewing on anything thinner than the husband’s jeans *$#@%^&*

Before I ~~manipulate~~ beg the husband to buy me a new sewing machine, I have to solve the fabric issue first. So if you know of any shops — yet to try those at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman — that sells nice designer fabrics, please drop me a comment below, ok? Thanks!

Until then, you’ll be seeing more of the Red fabric

Digging to America.

My Verdict:

Honestly, I bought this book because of its cover *LOL* But most importantly, I wanted to escape my usual Jodi Picoult bookathon

I was interested to know what became of the 2 Korean baby girls adopted to America by an American couple and an Iranian couple. Despite the different cultures, I think they grew up pretty similar since Ziba was very much bulldozed to follow Bitsy’s way.

The book was written in the third person. Each chapter it concentrates on the angle of a different character — Sami (the Iranian father), Ziba (the Iranian mother), Maryam (Sami’s mother), Bitsy (the American mother), Dave (Bitsy’s Dad), Jin Ho (Bitsy’s adopted daughter) and an onlooker at the airport.

I wonder why Tyler chose to use these particular characters, and why not the others. Because clearly she did not use Susan, Sami and Ziba’s adopted daughter.

Overall the story was slow and lack excitement. But nonetheless, we can witness a big difference of cultures.

I find myself relating to the Iranians for their overly politeness and extravagant in hospitality. Just like how I can relate to Amy Tan’s novel. Not a trait I’m very fond of…

The ending was abrupt. At least that was how I felt when the last page was turned. Did you find it otherwise?

First attempt with my new old toy *fingers crossed*

Oh btw, I took this little baby for a test run on Sunday and it was fun! My very first sewing experience with a machine after 29 years *LOL* So I finally sewed up my curtain ends, because I was too lazy to do it with a needle last year.

I wonder how long would this new found plaything would last?

The movie begins with the ultimate truth?
5yo Gigi gets pushed and called smelling like dog poo by a 6yo boy that she likes. Her mother consoles Gigi by telling her that the boy has a crush on her.

The older Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) then narrates “We are all programmed to believe that, if a guy acts like a total jerk, that means he likes you.”

But isn’t there some truth in it? I would second that as a universal default belief. Because I know it was mine!

My Verdict:

Although I’ve enjoyed the idea of the movie, I did find it too lengthy and anticipated for the ending. The movie is about 2 hours long.

Just like any other date movies, it will probably give you an ending that you’ll like
