Cloth Diapers, pt 2 – Baby Nappies.

This post is actually 2 months overdue since Part 1, back when I first started researching about Cloth Diapering. After reading the experiences of other Mommies, I’ve decided to use normal flatfold Baby Nappies rather than Pocket Cloth Diapers for now.

During the last Pureen Warehouse Sale, we’ve stocked up 4 packets of Checked Baby Napkins — that’s 40pcs of nappies good for a 2.5 days rotation. According to common washing instructions, we are recommended to wash the new baby nappies 3-4x before use to: 1) Remove chemicals and 2) Increase absorbency.

So far we’ve already washed all nappies twice. Can you imagine how our condo balcony looks like with 40 pieces of 30×30 nappies hanging about? It’s a good thing that they dry pretty quickly, so we can keep them asap *LOL*

A mommy (Happi from MsiaBrides) has suggested that I get 1-2 dozens of the nappies sewn with the Origami Fold. That will save me a lot of time from folding them each time when a diaper change is needed. A newborn needs to be changed 12-15x a day! So that’s a great tip indeed *thumbs up*

DIY Pre-Flatfolds with Origami Butterfly Fold

Flatfold Butterfly Origami Baby Nappies

3 Simple Steps
#1 Fold nappies & press with hot iron
#2 Pin securely with Sewing Pins
#3 Sew around the folded areas

I will start with 10 nappies first to see how they will fit LBJ. If only I’ve gotten the Brothers Sewing Machine last year — before I found out that I was pregnant — then I could sew the nappies myself instead of bringing it to the Tailor.

Too bad my mini Free Arm Sewing Machine can’t do the job :(

You won’t believe this, but the Tailor refused to sew my nappies for me!

She was not convinced that: 1) It is hygienic to sew them into layers, 2) It cannot be washed thoroughly if the poo sipped through the layers, 3) It is hard to dry and 4) The nappies will be smelly!

Actually neither was I or the husband was convinced. And I did too worried of the above problems *dilemma*

I’m going to hand sewn 1 to test today and see how the drying goes. As for the poopoo sipping through the layers, I hope the Nappy Liner would help. But even that I know, the poo might leak sideways out of the liner…

The wet folded nappy took 2 days to dry. And it still feels a bit cold to the touch.

I guess this method is not so suitable for people like me who stays in a condo that doesn’t get any direct sunlight. I reckon, the nappies will be smelly.

So it was a blessing in disguise that the Tailor didn’t want my business last Saturday. Else I would have to manually open all again, and waste whatever I’ve paid to have them sewn in the first place *umph*
