I bought Tanamera’s 3 days postnatal care massage package when I was still pregnant with Eli. It was an after-birth pamper that I really looked forward to since enjoying one the last time. Sadly after my 1st session, the happy expectation turned into a “painful” regret *sigh*

The 1st therapist that did my urut was unprofessional and short changed my session. Thankfully after informing Tanamera, they changed a new therapist for me immediately. Unfortunately however, real damage has already been done.

1st session

My Verdict: Therapist 1
Total time spent: 1hr 15mins

I started my urut on Day 8. It was scheduled at 10am but like most Malaysians, she was late. And came unequipped. We started the session close to 10.30am. She was gone before it was even noon. The session was supposed to be 2 hours, or more.

Her urut was very quick and forceful. I was looking forward to a slow relaxing pamper but instead she speed through my entire body and applied so much pressure — which I insisted reducing but ignored — that I was squinching from pain the entire hour. I had bruises on my thighs and arms for a week.

When it was time for the hot compress, she asked to use my rice cooker. Unlike the traditional use of hot stones, Tanamera uses a herbal compress (pic below) and they need to be steamed. Without one — mine already occupied — she asked if she could use another device. One made of water and minerals in a bag that uses direct current to heat up. Left with no choice, I obliged.

An hour later, she was done and began preparing the firming paste and kain bengkung. She folded the kain into half and began binding only my tummy after applying the paste. To my past experience, the bengkung was wrapped below my breast down to my hip. But because it was only around my tummy, once I stood up, I felt immediate pressure on my lower abdomen. I later realised that my internal hemorrhoid has been pushed outwards by the pressure causing it to swell *ouch*

I was in severe pain for the next 8 days. The swelling took more days to heal. I couldn’t have proper rest and sitting down was painful. I couldn’t do the bengkung the next 2 sessions and honestly, I consider that a shameful waste of money. I literally paid to get tortured. And of all time, my most vunerable after birth *fml*

I did not get piles after birthing my 3.8kg baby via natural birth, but this woman gave me piles after this supposedly guaranteed, I quote: truly wonderful… immensely nurturing and relaxing [experience] *baah*

2nd & 3rd session

My Verdict: Therapist 2
Total time spent: 2 hours

My experience with the 2nd therapist was thankfully pleasant. The lady is very motherly and her urut was just nice. She was kind to let me know what she was doing whenever I asked her. She explained the benefits of traditional malay urut and the importance of using gentle massages to rejuvenate a new mother’s body. I thought to myself: Somebody ought to tell this to the 1st therapist!

She brought her own mini rice cooker and I finally got to use the herbal compress. The sensation is different from using stones. It is gentler — no worry if it’ll burn the flesh like the stones may — and calming with the smell of herbal essential oils. I definitely prefer this over hot stones or the “water bag” that the 1st therapist used.

Finally when it was time to do the bengkung, I was relieved that she did it correctly. Unfortunately, because of my painfully swollen piles, I had to remove the bengkung after only binding a few hours. That was another day’s effort wasted, and same goes for the next day *sigh*

So if you ask me, I would not recommend buying their <del>overly priced</del> postnatal care massage packages. Honestly for RM530 of 3 sessions or RM850 of 5, they are really nothing to shout about. For half that price, I could hire my own urut lady — that wouldn’t hurt me — to do the same job and she could use the Tanamera postnatal care set on me just the same. And that’s exactly what I should have done *sulks*

Throughout my pregnancy, I had 3 different EDD: 12/4, 16/4 and lastly at 34wks it was 6/4. Whenever I’m asked about my due date, I would nonchalantly answer mid April because I knew all these dates were only an estimation. Secretly I looked forward to an Easter baby (8/4) or perhaps the perfect birthday present (4/4) all for myself.

Since I started taking Raspberry leaf tea at 35wks, my surges have gotten stronger. I began to anticipate an earlier arrival, so I kept asking Elizabeth to wait. But after Good Friday (already at 39wks) has come and gone, I was beginning to get anxious. I suspect I confused her by saying wait, wait, wait — hence the few false alarms — then hurry, hurry, hurry. I am such a control freak that I wonder if I actually willed “the show” into action.

At 6.55pm on Easter Sunday, I had my first bloody show with consistent surges of 10mins apart. I asked Hubby (Ben) to take a look and also Googled the description to be extra sure that this was not another rehearsal. At 7.30pm, I texted Wai Han to share my progress and told her that Elizabeth might still make it as Easter baby. She replied: Today is Easter? Good timing but that’s 4 hours to midnight *oops*

Nate was at my Mom’s so we got to have a quiet dinner of takeaways and finished up the yummy macarons that Hubby got for my birthday. I managed to cleared my bowels — a must to avoid accidents during birthing — and got some rest as surges were stronger in lateral position, while Hubby began preparing our birth pool. On and off again, I would do spirals on the birth ball to help Elizabeth on her journey. I also took VCO to help smoothen the path whenever I remembered.

Our Birth Pool
Tomorrow this will be the kids’ pool

One Last Shot
At 39 weeks and 3 days

Elizabeth was having a lot of hiccups. She was also moving a lot and that got me running to the loo every half hour. My surges were 5mins apart when I texted Wai Han again. It was already 11.50pm and I knew my dragon girl is not hopping in with a basket of chocolate eggs anytime soon. Wai Han joked that perhaps baby follows US time *keke*

It is now the next day. Wai Han reached at 2.30am after I got out from the pool. I found my surges slowed down while I was inside but Elizabeth seemed to enjoy it because she was literally having her one last swim inside Mommy. It was getting late so Wai Han suggested for us to get some rest while we waited for the surges to progress. Honestly I was too excited to sleep but thankfully managed to rest an hour or so in between surges.

At 6.18am, I welcomed my 2nd bloody show. That means I will get to cradle my baby any time soon! I entered the pool at 8.30am, welcoming each surge by visualising Elizabeth making her journey through the birth path and out the blossoming rose. My surges were stalled at 6mins apart but the intensity were picking up. This whole time, Elizabeth was happily doing last minute warm ups to get ready for her grand debut.

I think it was about 11am when I lost all track of time. The pain was escalating and I was loosing breath even though I was breathing. I was on all fours and Hubby had to enter the pool to apply pressure on my hips. Occasionally Wai Han will need to help because I was yelling bloody murder whenever I felt the pressure released. That was my drug. My epidural. No one is taking their hands off me, period!

My surges came and go like a tsunami. It lasted as long as 10mins each time and returned within a minute interval. I had no time to gather my composure and here it comes again hitting me full force. The urge to push was so strong, I had to yell and begged myself to stop: DON’T-PUSH-PLEASE! I could no longer hear Marie Mongan’s Birth Affirmation playing in the background. Wai Han kneeled in front of me and continuosly reminding me to breathe to baby. The intensity of each surge was so overwhelming that it was near impossible to relax. Why hasn’t Elizabeth crowned yet? I remembered myself asking.

The “real” 2nd bloody show happened. The earlier one at 6am was just a ruse to get me excited. Soon after that my water broke. It happened with so much force, I felt myself being pushed upwards and I nearly lost my balance. For a split second, I thought Elizabeth had exploded out of me. I was sadden that my hopes for an encaul baby didn’t come true. She had passed motion in utero and there were now traces of meconium in the pool.

After what seemed like forever, I finally heard Wai Han saying that baby is crowning. The insane urge to push earlier was no longer there. I kept breathing down as Wai Han guided me. I can’t remember if I felt the ring of fire because the surges were much stronger. The really amazing thing was, I never did once push. I let Elizabeth take her time. Soon I heard Wai Han whispered to Ben saying that the baby’s head is big, and later that her eyes are opened. I felt a shoulder slid out and then a big huge relief as my daughter’s entire body came gushing out of me. And Daddy received his baby girl!

I got upright from all fours and lifted my right leg for the umbilical cord to pass through so Hubby could pass me our baby. I felt a tug inside me and realised that the cord is quite short. I sat down and Hubby passed Elizabeth to me. After 3 hours of intense labour, I finally got to cradle my baby girl!

Elizabeth was covered in slippery gooey vernix. She smells of everything wonderful and new. She has jet black hair and sepet kuachi shaped eyes. She was soft and round and cuddly and heavy. When I called her name, she turned and looked right at me: Hello Mommy, there you are! She was such a calm and peaceful baby. Nate was so happy to see his baby sister, he burst into Happy Birthday and May the good Lord bless you song *aww*

The surges returned soon after. It wasn’t as intense but still as painful. Wai Han suggested breastfeeding Elizabeth to hasten the birth of the placenta. As though in agreement, Elizabeth let out her first cry. Once I put her to my breast, she latched on and begun sucking. After three surges and one big push, I birthed the placenta! It all happened within 30mins.

Our Water Dragon
Finally she’s in my arms!

Plassi, the Placenta
It nourished my baby and now me too!

After birthing the placenta, I started to feel terribly tired. Elizabeth was getting heavy in my arms. I passed her to Hubby and sat motionless. He kept insisting that I come out of the pool but I felt too heavy to move. Alas he had no choice but to deflate and empty the pool as the water was quickly turning red. I was hemorrhaging.

When I could finally crawl out of the half deflated pool, I dropped on the floor and passed out. I was half conscious when I heard Wai Han asked if I wanted to go to the hospital. The thought of being carried down in a stretcher to the ambulance and wheeled into the hospital made me even more sick. Immediately I shoke my head and said NO.

I have no idea how long I laid there on the floor while Hubby hurriedly clean up and cleared away the pool. I could feel blood oozing out of me continously. I heard Wai Han telling Ben how white I am becoming. In an effort to hope stop the bleeding, she placed a small piece of placenta into my mouth. It tasted like fresh blood. Finally with that little bit of strength, Hubby helped me onto the bed and I fell asleep from exhaustion.

I woke up on and off again. I looked around for my baby and saw her wrapped up at my feet with the placenta still attached in a colander. I was having pain in my abdomen that felt like bad period cramps. I thought my uterus was contracting. Up until then, I have not had a bite to eat — only a spoonful of rice at 7.30am because I wasn’t hungry — and it was already 5pm. No wonder I was also having these nasty gastric pain. My body was starving after all the hard work.

At 8.30pm when my parents dropped by, I was still bleeding. If my bed was not covered with incontinence sheets, it would have been soaked with my blood. My Mom helped me to the bathroom to clean up. As I sat down on the toilet — I have not peed since I got into the pool — I felt something fell out. They were two pieces of blood clots the size of my palm each. After the clots came out, the painful cramps I was having stopped and so did the hemorrhaging.

It was not until after midnight that I had the strength to hold and breastfeed my baby. That whole time Elizabeth was sleeping peacefully as though she knew her Mommy needed the rest too. When morning came, I felt much stronger and began breastfeeding around the clock.

Later in the day, we weighed Elizabeth and myself on the digital scale, did the subtraction and got the result of 3.8kg. She measured 50cm from head to ankle. When evening came, we were ready to share our good news. I posted on my Facebook timeline and on my blog. As for Elizabeth’s pictures, that will have to wait

In conclusion to this very long story: I did not have any drugs. I birthed a considerably big baby. I did not have a perineal tear. I did not have piles. I birthed my placenta naturally. There were no medical interventions. Elizabeth was received by her Daddy and had immediate skin to skin contact with Mommy. She was fully breastfed. We kept her cord attached until it was 9pm. Daddy gave his baby girl her first bath the next day, allowing the vernix to be fully absorbed. Elizabeth was never separated from Mommy and Daddy.

Although I did not experienced a calm and relaxing labour like most HypnoBirthing mommies, but our hopes for a gentle birth for Elizabeth came true! She was born calm and alert, and is a beautiful smiling newborn baby ♥

Placenta Capsules
Made from Me

My Verdict:

Looks just like any other herbal supplements, but these are made from my very own placenta after Eli’s birth by my beloved Husband ♥

I started taking 3 capsules twice daily on Day 6 after Eli was born. The effect was not immediate but I definitely felt more alive

Eli’s jaundice level spiked to 381 on Day 5, so we had no choice but to admit her into Gleneagles. As a new mother, the journey back and forth from the hospital was pretty taxing. The distance to the basement car park was taxing. Thankfully we had my Dad’s wheelchair to help reduce the walking.

The placenta capsules helped me through the episode. Not only physically by boosting my energy level but most importantly, they helped me emotionally when I had to part ways from my newborn for 2 days.

I did cry of course. But it could’ve been worst. I blamed myself for not spotting it earlier and breastfeed her more. I was guilt striken. I missed my baby terribly *sobs* The hormones in my placenta put balance to my body’s depleated hormones after labour and helped me not fall into depression.

I will be posting a Part 3: The Making in another post. It’s a Step by Step photo process of the encapsulation. The husband was sweet to snap the pictures for me during his preparation.

The post will be password protected. Seriously not everyone can stomach it — although it’s just another piece of meat and there were no killings involved — and I’ll possibly be labelled a cannibal. Then so are millions of Chinese out there since this practice have a 500 year history *smug*

If you are genuinely interested to have a look, do drop a comment below and I’ll email you the password

Three weeks ago while the Husband was drowning with deadlines, I told LBT to wait for Daddy to finish his work. Then 2 weeks ago, I told her to wait again for Mommy to get the belly cast done. And finally last week, I told her to wait till Saturday after Scubby got his groom — the anticipated super short furcut to limit shedding during my confinement — and we’ll be all set to roll out the pink carpet.

For 3 weeks, I negotiated with the little dragon to debut on 2 April 2012 (38 weeks 4 days) or anytime after Palm Sunday — coincidentally it is also April Fool’s Day, so it wasn’t such a good date — and within Holy Week till Easter Sunday. Mommy was definitely being too idealistic because our darling girl have other plans.

LBT got us really excited early yesterday morning (4.35am, Good Friday) thinking that this was it. Daddy worked from home to stand by and my Mom was prepared to cook my first yummy confinement meal. I texted Wai Han at 8am then waited for labour to progress. After breakfast, the strong surges calmed and it was back to the on off Braxton Hicks. That was the 3rd false alarm this week, 1st one being on 2 April itself!

Since I started drinking raspberry leaves tea at 35 weeks, my surges have been more frequent and the tightening sensation lasted longer up till 10 minutes or more, making it harder for me to determine the length of each surge. The tea definitely helped my uterus to contract more efficiently as promised. Let’s see if it will really shorten my labour *fingers crossed*

Staying Focus
Notes to help me visualise

I am really really all set for my birthing day. I prepared these printouts and taped it to our wardrobe — eye level to my birthing pool — so I won’t forget what to do, especially Breathe and Don’t Push. It can get pretty overwhelming and this is our 1st (and last) home birth after all despite being slightly more experienced with baby no2.

I love the visual of the blossoming rose, as it helps me to visualise the gentle unfolding of my perineum like rose petals for LBT to ease out through the birth canal. The optimal birth position of the baby is very useful too. Whenever I rub my baby bump, that’s exactly how LBT is lying inside me. The day I put this up, Nate told me that this is his little sister inside Mommy’s tummy! *aww*

False alarms or not, I’m secretly glad that I still have one more day with my precious bundle. Tomorrow I know I will miss her so much. So let’s enjoy today a minute more ♥

For months I’ve been listening to Marie Mongan’s Birth Affirmation. Till today, I still can’t remember precisely the words pass the 1st sentence: I put all fears aside as I prepare for the birth of my baby.

It finally struck me that they were not mine no matter how much they echoed my hopes. So at last, here is my affirmation — in my words, from my heart — that truly says me.

I will be repeating these words until they become a litany that claims my conscious and subconscious mind. Until I feel them so real that my birthing day will be as perfect as my mind paints it to be. That is why this is called Hypno-Birthing

My Birth Affirmation

I am flawless
Because God made me perfect
I bring new life with my body
My baby grows healthy and complete within me
We will have a wonderful, peaceful birth
We work as a team
And soon we shall meet
My placenta will come easy
And everything will be complete

I started researching about this topic about a month ago and it took me that long to decide if I wanted to do a post on it. Alas here I am, with hopes to share this wealth with you. Please read with an open mind, or quickly scroll down to the next.

We all know what is a placenta. It is an amazing organ that nourishes our baby and keeps Mommy-Baby connected via the umbilical cord. After baby is born, the placenta is then birthed and left to the hospital’s disposal. If we want it back, a prior request must be made – even though it is rightly ours to begin with.

The placenta contains great restorative properties to assist new mothers in their postpartum recovery. Even our animal friends know it and takes full advantage. So why do we treat it as waste instead? With over 500 years of history — in traditional Chinese medicine — Placentophagy is often misunderstood as cannibalism and a fear factor taboo. Ironically it is ok to inject animal placenta for beauty but not consume our own for health *roll eyes*

Will I eat my placenta? If it was served on a platter, I will downright say No. But when encapsulated, it’s just like any other supplements. Humans have eaten weirder things — exotic food, anyone? — for health, so what is so wrong with eating our own placenta? When I asked Dr Tan previously about this, he also acknowledged the practice that some people eat it for health.

How did I come to this decision? Since I don’t have a garden to plant it on the ground — commonly practiced by the Malays — nor do I want to treat my placenta as a waste, I decided the next best thing was to plant it in me and reap its full benefits. The husband will be our Placenta Encapsulator Specialist *hehe* All we have to do now is find where to buy the capsule filler thingamajig.

Hopefully everything goes as plan so there’ll be a Part 2: My Verdict. Till then, here’s another good read for further enlightenment on the Benefits of Eating your Placenta.

Added 7/4/2012, 3.49pm

We just bought the empty gelatin capsules at the Chinese Medical Hall near our home. They came in a bag of 1000 capsules for RM18. That’s too many for us.

If anyone is interested, please let me know and we’ll see where the husband can drop some off to you.

As for the capsule filler thingamajig, we can’t find it sold locally but in the States. So looks like the husband will need to fill the grounded placenta manually one by one.

What is it?

Iron is a mineral that makes hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout our body.

Why is it important?

Our blood increases 50% when we are pregnant. So we need more iron to make more hemoglobin for all the extra blood to carry oxygen. We also need extra iron for our growing baby and placenta.

Additionally, iron helps to avoid symptoms of tiredness, weakness, irritability and depression.

So how much iron do I need? 30mg a day when I am pregnant and later while breastfeeding. I’ll need to eat at least 3 servings of iron riched food and complement it with Vitamin C to help absorption. Then topping up on fiber to avoid constipation — a symptom commonly affects all pregnant women — because of the extra iron intake *wow*

I do not take additional supplements besides the prenatal vitamin (New Obimin) and Calcium prescribed by Dr Tan. He explained that they already provide all the necessary supplemental nutrients that I need. However as I have decided on a natural 3rd stage — as stated in my hospital birth plan — he has advised me to bank in extra blood for “rainy days”.

Salus Floradix Formula
NP: RM153.90, Member: RM146.20

This liquid iron and vitamin formula was recommended by our HypnoBirthing sifu, Wai Han. Friends that took it also swore by its result. So on Wednesday night, I asked the husband to get it for me at Eu Yan Sang shop in Jusco and I started taking — 10ml twice daily, before meal — it the very next day.

What I like about Floradix? 1) It doesn’t cause constipation, 2) made with delicious fruit juice base, 3) no preservatives, 4) alchohol free and 5) easy to digest liquid solution.

I’ve only taken it 4x so far but I’m already reaping the difference. I feel less fatigue and nature has been calling with no interference *hehe*

If you are also looking for an iron booster alternative, I would recommend Floradix. It has been providing safe and effective iron supplementation for over 60 years. That gotta count for something. Right?

Scrub a Dub Dub
RM15 for a bar of 125g

My Verdict:

I started using this herbal scrub end of January, twice weekly and it finally broke into tiny pieces yesterday. That means one bar can last about 2 months, depending how frequent you use it and if you use it for your entire body.

I use the bar mainly on my heels, knees, under arms and thighs. I found it particularly effective on my heels. For the longest time I’ve used plenty of moisturisers but none could battle my dry cracked heels. I was very happy after using for a week that my rough sandy heels became smoother *thumbs up*

I love the grainy texture of the soap on my skin, and how my bathroom would smell like a spa from the aromatic patchouli oil. Evidently I am now a convert. And the photo above proves my conversion. I’ve stocked up 7 — clause for minimum purchase of RM100 — additional bars and am now a happy camper
